The minimum required separation distance between sewer lines and potable water lines is typically acknowledged as 10 feet in many regulations and guidelines to ensure the safety of drinking water. However, it's important to note that different jurisdictions may have specific requirements based on local codes or conditions.

In this situation, although your choice of 9 feet may seem reasonable, it is generally advisable to follow the standard guidelines if they dictate a greater distance to mitigate any risks associated with contamination. The rationale behind the specified separation distance is to minimize the potential for cross-contamination between sewage and drinking water systems, maintaining public health and safety.

A proper understanding of the local regulations and guidelines is crucial for ensuring compliance with all health and safety measures regarding the construction and maintenance of these essential utility lines.
